Like an Olive – Vyvyan Bloomfield – Buy online.

Vyvyan Bloomfield likes getting her fingers dirty with paint and ink, creating mostly landscapes, imaginary or real, as well as writing about common, daily things, moments in life, some philosophical considerations and a few surprisingly self-deprecating, humorous reflections. Her poetic language goes from matter-of-fact to romantic and heartfelt at times, with a penchant for “saying it as it is”, which will bring out smiles on many faces. Her second book of short stories and years was published late 2025.

G’Day Owyagoin’ – Vyvyan Bloomfield

Oh My Goat! – Shane Gehlert – Buy here.

Just how intelligent are the animals we call food? Have you ever stared at a steak, peered at a pork chop or glanced at a goat curry and wondered about that animal? Where did it come from, and how was it raised? Did that creature think, play, dream, or have feelings? Or was it simply a mindless creature destined for the dinner plate? ” Oh, My Goat ” takes a rollicking adventure through the history of how we have viewed, judged, treated, sacrificed, mummified, deified and – fried animals. Blending science, history, and humour, this book exposes the uncomfortable realities of modern factory farming — from towering hog hotels to chickens that grow so fast they fall over — and challenges the idea that these animals are simply products.
Wild animals currently make up only 4% of Earth’s mammalian biomass, with livestock dominating the rest. This sheds light on the importance of how we treat the animals we call “food”. From the psychology of pigs, the social lives of sheep, and the cognitive powers of chickens, Gehlert reveals surprising research that shows just how much we share — biologically, cognitively and emotionally with the animals in our farms and on our forks.
How much meat? Unbelievably, our love affair with meat may well have brought about the “Meatropocene”, a term Gehlert coined to describe the profound impact the 360 million tons of meat we produce and consume each year has on our planet. But far from a guilt trip, the author invites us to look closer, think deeper, and make more informed choices. Whether you’re a meat-eater, flexitarian, vegetarian, or just curious, Oh My Goat will challenge how you view the creatures behind your cuisine.

Robert Brooke – The Sheltering Wolf – buy here.  “If you had the ability to travel back in time to witness any one thing, what would it be?” Guy Curtis has invented an extraordinary device. With it, he develops a plan to send his best friend, Ian Lambie, back to Whitechapel, in the heart of London’s East End. Back to November of the year 1888, to the time of Jack the Ripper. The plan for Ian is simple; hide in the shadows at the scene of the Ripper’s last atrocity and discretely follow him as he leaves. See where he goes. Do nothing more than that. From such basic data, his elusive identity can finally be established. What could possibly go wrong?… Now, in the year 2023, the East End of London is suddenly seeing the worst murders in over 130 years and the police have no idea who is responsible. It’s almost as though a nightmare from a dark past has returned…

How much can MS Koala Bear? – Sharon Millow

“In 2007, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. One year later I broke my first bone, being my wrist. Two years from the diagnosis, after many challenges and many falls, I was in a powered wheelchair. It has been a long and difficult struggle with MS, but many years later, I am stronger and more resilient than ever. In 2018, I published, ‘the MonSter’ about my journey with MS.  In 2022, I was met with another curveball, being a diagnosis of cervical cancer. This book, ‘How Much Can MS Koala Bear?’, tells the tale of my diagnosis, family reactions and support, the operation and subsequent radiation, and then my recovery from cancer.

It is a continuation of “the MonSter”, telling of my struggles to improve my life and strengths, and includes some of my writing homework for Beerwah Writers Group, who have been an amazing support for me for many years and also Mum’s cancer diagnosis the same year, which hasn’t responded well, sadly.”

Congratulations Neil Halpin on your 2nd book. We are thrilled for you.
